Which Anti-Virus?

I recently updated my McAfee anti-virus, firewall and spam-killer to find that my computer has slowed down tremendously.

Surfing the net has become painfully slow.

I want to get back to my previous computer speed without leaving my computer open for all and sundry.
Does anyone have any advice as to what security is available that does not have a detrimental effect on computer speed?

Thanks in advance

I have used the following free security on all my computers for years without problems.

ZoneAlarm firewall
AVG antivius
Ewido spyware (now owned by AGV)

i also run A2 and AdAware regularly.

Good, sensible advice and download links here:

Many of us here suggest AVG Anti-Virus free edition.

And Free does not mean bad, as they provide the same product to companies in multi-site licenses.

Zone alarm is an excellent free firewall

I also use Adaware and WinPatrol which are also both free.

These are the only 4 security products I run on my PCs and so far they have served me well, and they are all free.
As both Ethel and Vehelfulguy suggest, there is point in paying for any security software. AVG updates and scans daily and consistently scores 100% in independent tests of virus detection.

The vast majority of the 'regulars' here in AB's Technology section, myself included, use AVG in combination with the free version of Zone Alarm. They deal with all of the real security threats to your PC but it's also a good idea to use something like AdAware Personal Edition.
