The majority of the 'regulars', here on AB's Technology section, (myself included) use AVG Free Edition. It consistently scores 100% in independent tests of its effectiveness. It also automatically updates itself every day:

another vote for AVG.
it always amuses me when ISP's sell their products with free firewalls and anti-virus' included as both are available free over the internet anyway in excellent incarnations!
The only other excellent free one I know of is AntiVir Personal, which is like AVG. The only reason I use it instead of AVG is because I run Windows XP x64 edition which AVG Free is not compatible with.

must agree avg is the best
AVG gets my vote.
AVG was recommended to me and I have it on my main pc now. Will be replacing 'Norton' on my laptop too once current subsrcription expires....
Gets my vote..
I've just downloaded Avast, which has worked a treat so far.
