Samsung laptop problems

My laptop screen froze two nights ago while I was in the middle of doing some xmas shopping.
Someone at work suspects a problem with it overheating.
Now the screen will not come on at all and the man in my local computer shop thinks it will be a problem with the motherboard, which will have to be sent away until after xmas and will probably cost about �300!
Does anyone have any ideas about possible causes and why should this happen when I have only had it 2 years? Now that the warranty has expired would you expect Samsung to fix it as I think they should considering its age.
