usb port problem.??

there are 2 usb ports on the front of my computer, one has the modem/broadband connection, the other has a mp3 player lead.
having pulled out the mp3 lead to connect my digital camera,the modem just went off completely.
when i took the camera lead out ,it came back on again.
when i put the mp3 lead back in it cut out again,so that didnt work where it had done before.
whats happened .????
