Router/Modem Problem

im not sure if this is the correct place to post this but here goes:
So i have 2 pc's and orgionally they accesses 1mb broadband via a Zoom ADSL modem connected to a hub and both worked fine fast internet etc..apart from my partner wasnt able to play a game with his mate over the internet due to firewall issue
so.... we bought a netgear modem/router all in one and plugged everything right and game works but internet is really really slow like seems slower than a dial up
is there any setting i can change or anything ive done wrong or reason the internet would be so slow, spoken to netgear and they are worse than useless, what can i do to speed up the internet connection

Are you using your computers wired, and not wireless?
Also, have you tried just browsing the internet, without doing anything else on any of the other computers?
Finally, if it's a wireless router, make sure that you change the admin password and either disable wireless or set a password for it. Ideally also set the MAC addresses of your computers, as a further precaution. (I'm thinking that if wireless is enabled, then some neighbours may be using your connection, and downloaded stuff, slowing your connection.)
