Linksys Router and DNS Error

Hi,

I've been having problems connecting to the net wirelessly on my laptop. Spent over 2 hours on the phone to PC World support line yesterday which resulted in me having to completely restore my laptop so I lost EVERYTHING! And to boot, still have the same problem when I try to connect to the net.

The laptop says it is connected to the network and I can access the router settings from my web page but everytime I try to go to a website or connect to messenger it comes up with DNS error. Have tried to contact linksys to no avail (their phone number is not recognised and its the one from their website?)

I decided to take my laptop to my friends house as she has a wireless network there and it connected fine, no error messages.

Have tried the CMD and things like flushdns, registerdns etc etc, have turned off the modem and router for 5 mins+ and really have no idea what to do next!

Does the above suggest the router is at fault?

Any help/advice that you can provide would be so much appreciated.

From the CMD, do :

ipconfig /all

and post the results here.

You could manually set the DNS to 154.32.105.18 and 154.32.107.18

Start, Settings, Network Connections, Right Click the connection, Properties, Find TCP/IP, Properties, Select 'Use the following DNS servers' and enter the 2 addresses above. Click OK.

And you're sure the router is connected to the internet? From the CMD, can you do :

ipconfig /all

and let me know the results?

I have tried ipconfig/all whilst on the phone to pc world and its all as normal, the pd address in 192.168.1.1 and the subnet is 255.255.255 or something like that.

Router is definately connected to the internet

This sounds like an encryption problem.I had an identical problem with my D-Link modem/router which was cured by deleting the log-in details on my laptop and re-entering them.But you would have needed to do this presumably when you restored your OS

How did you connect to your friend's network, was that encrypted and if so did you delete her log-in details before you tried re-connecting to yours.

When I connected to my friends network it was just a case of turning on the laptop then it came up with a message saying wireless networks have been detected (this is what it has been doing) then it connected to the netwrok there, didn't need to change anything.

The laptop is still says that it is connected to the network when I switch but still won't connect to the internet, just comes up with 'Page cannot be displayed' and then at the bottom, 'cannot find server or DNS Error'

The fact you can see your router's config screen means that any encryption is working fine. Do you have MAC (or hardware) address filtering turned on? This will let you get on the network, but will stop you accessing the internet if it doesn't recognise your MAC address.

Can you do this from CMD :

tracert 154.32.105.18

And let use know the results. I would think it would get to 192.168.1.1 then timeout after that.

Have just tried that and it came up with as follows:

tracing the route to 154.32.105.18 over a maximum of 30 hops

1 192.168.1.1 reports: Destination net unreachable.

Sorry, should have said with last post that problem still the same.

Am thinking its now a router problem? Am going to take the laptop and router back to where I bought it either tomorrow or Monday if I can't fix it as its really irritating me.
