I think I currently have USB 1.1 but my new mp3 player needs USB 2. How do I check what I've got and how hard is it to replace USB 1.1 with USB 2?

Only the new (within the last 3-6 months or so) mainboards come with USB 2 as standard so I would say it is likely that you probaby only have USB 1.1 Fitting a PCI USB 2 card is very easy and they are not that expensive, you may want the USB 2 / Firewire combination card to make your PC more future proof. I think the minimum requirement for USB 2 is Windows 98SE, so if you have an OS before this, I would think about an upgrade. Finally, if you are MAC user, they don't use USB 2 as they prefer the Firewire alternative.
A USB2.0 device is backwards-compatible and will revert to USB1.1 speeds in the absence of a USB2.0 socket. AFAIK, This is part of the USB2.0 spec. and should be adhered to by the device manufacturer.
It WILL work with USB 1.1 no doubt about that and unless you have an MP3 Jukebox with several GB storage I don't think it will be worth buying a USB 2 PCI card to transfer 128mb.
