hi all--i have 2 pc's each running xp and networked--i have set up file sharing between the 2 machines--from my main machine i can go to network places and access anything on my backup machine--however when i go to the backup machine i can access my c drive on the main machine and open any folder/file except my programs folder--altho it is set to sharing it tells me: program files not available, u may not have permission--contact administrator etc etc--going back to my main machine c drive and rt clicking on program files and choosing sharing it says at the bottom of the sharing dialogue box--all the options on this tab are disabled because this folder is used by the operating system--this is despite the prog files icon having the little hand under it in the c drive window--strangely it is the only one that has and i can't access it from my other computer while all the others i can--this has only developed--was working ok b4--anyone any ideas--thanks

Not sure im understanding your question properly but try temporarily disabling your security programs just long enough to rule that out as a possibility.

thanks peanut--will try and make it clearer--comp A & comp B--networked & both set up for file sharing--from A i can access ANY drive folder or file on B--from B i can access ALL drives folders and files on A EXCEPT the programs folder on its C drive--thats when i get the no permission--contact admin'r etc--on comp A the c:\program files icon has the little hand under it indicating it is set up to share but cannot get at it from B--can't see it being a security issue since i can access everything else on A--cheers--arthur--ps got an idea--will get back
ajmmac, I had sharing issues on my network too and it turned out to be good ole (yeh right) norton. Thats why i gave that suggestion. I just tried to share my program files folder and it says "all sharing options are disabled because these files are used by the operating system". Now if you are able to share that folder then maybe you need to check the box for allow network users to change files.

hi peanut--u are getting the same message i get when i go to file-share the programs folder--i had it set up to share and couldn't change it to not share--i tried to drag it to the shared folder in my user folder in documents and settings--it warned it would no longer be available to share on the network--i went ahead--after this i dragged it back to c drive and it was not then set to share--when i tried again to set it up to share i once more got the "all sharing options are disabled because these files are used by the operating system".--all options are greyed out and i cannot click on "allow network users to change files."--gonna try a restore but not sure when this started--will be back--cheers
Question Author
hi peanut--and anyone else out there--i have restored my system to a date where the program files folder is not set up for sharing--the situation is the same--cannot do anything in the share folders/files window for the program files folder on c drive--i can think of no reason why it would be being used by the operating system--it contains no system files--only applications--were i to delete the folder windows would still run
Heres an idea, not sure if it will work or exactly what files you are trying to share but can't you just copy and paste the files you are looking to share into another folder you are currently able to share on your network?
Question Author
actually peanut i copied the whole folder to another folder and i can access it all from my other computer--it is now really a battle between me and the os-- lol--why should it block me when the os does not need anything that is in the program files folder--gonna beat the sucka--cheers
