Bit - Torrent Downloading / File Sharing

On another thread, I enquired about the legality of file sharing on bit-torrent sites, such asThe Pirate Bay.
Is it done with any special software? I have the usual array of Windows programs/softeware in the latest version on my PC.
If i want, say an episode of '24' downloaded, i go to that particular file and download it, yet my PC can't play it.
Where am i going wrong / What do i need to do?

Yes, you need a BitTorrent client. This lets you download torrent files (what you've downloaded), and then gets the actual video for you. Noticed that the files you have are only very small -- far, far too small for a video file?
I'd recommend Azureus:

BitTorrent itself is totally legal. It does have some legal uses (downloading of GNU/Linux distros being a main one). It's the sharing of copyrighted material without the copyright holder's permission that is illegal.

Utorrent can be configured to stop seeding after a while whereas Azureus just goes on for ever. Well it did the last time I used it.
