Over the last couple of days, when I've been working on the computer there has been a clicking sound, the screen goes very dark all of a sudden and then gradually gets lighter. While it is getting lighter the screen "shrinks" back to it's normal size (diffiucult to explain), and thene verything is back to normal. It has happened probably 5 or 6 times over the last two days. Any idea what's causing it?

I don't know for sure what the problem is, but based on the many monitors i have seen die I would suggest that it is time you started counting your pennies and get ready to purchase a new monitor.
Yep, I agree. It very much sounds as if your monitor is about to kaak it.
The clicking sounds you hear is probably the monitor loosing and regaining communication with your computer.
There is a small chance that your graphics card is dying, but that would be rare.

If you live close to me and want to pop your computer over to me, I'll have a look at it for you, completely free of charge.

I live in New Zealand. honest.
