what programme do i need to play an avi file? windows media player doesn't play it does it?

If you search in google for AVI player you find loads of them.
If may be a DivX file so you need one that plays DivX
If you are on XP you can right click on the file, then select Open With then Choose Program, then at the bottom of the page you can select Look for an appropriate program on the web and it will find one for you.
Search for either DivX player or VLC media player at www.videolan.org, these will usually play almost any AVI file.
Just for info, AVI files are not all the same coding, there are a number of different coding systems which all create AVI files, windows media player can play some AVI files if you can get the correct codec for that type of file,
