Multiple landline telephones

Argos sell multiple digital telephone packages. Do they all require a telephone socket in each room or is there a base phone and the rest work as an intercom?

The base phone must be plugged in to the phone socket, the others don't.

Obviously only one call can be conducted at the same time, although it is possible for more than one phone to be taking part in the call.

All phones will ring.
