I don't quite understand.

You have a wireless router, and your laptop is wireless enabled?

So, to set up the router, it's much easier to get an RJ-45 cable (ask for an ethernet cat-5e cable), from some electronics store, or even PC World or soemwhere like that. expect to pay a few pounds for a short one (2metres or so).

then you just connect the router to your laptop with the cable, which lets you access the router's settings, and enable wireless encryption, password, etc. once all is set up and you can get online with the cable, you can disconnect the cable, and see if your wireless will work. it'll detect your network that you've set up with the router, and it'll ask for a password (the one you entered before when setting it up). it's just a matter of typing the password in. then you should be wireless!
