i have a new radeon 9600 xt 256mb graphics card which has a very noisey fan when i first turn on the computer.this loud whinning noise lasts for about 2 -3 mins before settling down to silent running.as this is the first graphics card i have had with a built in fan can anyone tell me if this is normal with this type of card or is the bearing on the fan on the way out as i suspect and should i return it under warenty even though it seems to work ok . if i remove the card before starting up my pc all is quiet.

I would return it if it's still under warranty.

But you could try sorting it out with a little WD-40. I had similar problem with my laptop cooling fan. What I did was take the whole fan unit off and squirt a little WD-40 inside the gap of the fan, spin the fan with your finger so the oil covers all the bearing and wipe off any excess oil and fix it back on. It should run silent.

From my experience, graphics card fans generally run noisy for a short while before settling down, although I've only known it to be for 2-3 seconds, as opposed to 2-3 minutes.
