Any ideas? Just bought the 60GB in Black, installed the software and not alot of action since. I can hear the hard dish whirring now and again.

Bring it straight back! For such an expensive bit of kit, you shouldn't be looking for workarounds to get it to work like it should. Take it back to the shop and get a new one. Make sure you know what your Statutory Rights are in case they try to fob you off on Apple.
had similar issues with a friends - it appears she had not followed the instructions properly, apologies if you did but the most common IT issue is user error !
