With Tesco 02, connection is awful, we have lots of trees around and making a call is impossible, no network component in. Paid for phone, am in SIM only so good price. How can I find out which is the best phone ( just a basic for calls and internet)) and best for connection for my area, and not costing a packet every month? I don’t play games, just emails WhatsApp and photos basically. I am not technical, thanks all.

Do you get good coverage when you're out and about?
Check EE coverage for your area here:
https://coverage.ee.co.uk/coverage/ee
Check Vodaphone coverage here:

And check Three coverage here:

Those checkers are rubbish and very misleading. I have a vodafone and an O2 phone and the coverage checkers for both say good with 4 bars indoors and out up to and including 4G for my postcode and it's just not true. Mobile calls (not even talking internet) break up and are muffled as I move about the house. You'd do far better to ask neighbours.
Ask your neighbours who they use.
Yodafone.

mmmmm! good signal you want? go ten miles down the road you must......
It very much depends on the type of house you have and the external landscape, too. The types of walls, window frames, proximity to hills, tall buildings will affect the quality of the connection.
Good idea to ask your neighbours if they have similar houses to yours.

Thanks all, will do. Any recommendations for best value phone??
Are you buying a new phone as well as a new SIM card?

By the way, when you do decide on a new SIM get it on a one month rolling contract so you can easily change if it's rubbish. You can swap to a longer contract if you're happy with it later

Yes I want to keep my number but my phone is old, it’s 2G or 3G. So what do you suggest? Sorry I just have no idea where to start.
What sort of price do you want to pay?
