If there's ten people in a room and one of them earns more than the other nine individually he might be classified as rich. But if all are within, say, £100 a year of each other then it would be hard to call our chap rich. All of them, however, could be called rich if one was to compare their individual income or wealth, or both, with the poorest country on earth. So it's all very silly. In this country, as with most western countries, higher earners pay more income tax than lower earners, which is so-called progressive taxation. And the 'rich' pay a lot more in other taxes, like VAT, simply because they purchase more goods and services. All in favourof lots and lots of people being extremely rich so they contribute more in taxation and, potentially, enable business to employ more people who, in turn, pay more tax...
