We have HP Pavilion laptop zv5230ea. Specs say that it will take 2Gb max RAM in 2 slots as do memory sites I have searched. Problem is there is only one slot under panel on base of machine. With 1Gb stick in there the total memory reads as 1Gb + 128Mb. Where is the second slot? I assume the 128 is an onboard memory?

Many laptops have a "hidden" slot and a "open" slot.

The 128Mb sounds as though it is on the motherboard, inside the laptop case. Thst is the "hidden" first slot.

The other slot has a 1Gb card in it, this is the second "open" slot.

If you want 2Gb you will need to get it placed inside the latop case on the mothervoard, in place of the 128Mb. Do not do this yourself, as it may invalidate your gaurantee.

Maybe you need to send it back to HP to get it done, which will probably be expensive.

Thank you. Checked with HP and they sent comprehensive instructions on accessing the hidden slot under the keyboard and no reference to warranty issues.
