Barred PUK on mobiles

I had my phone stolen from me, and luckily I was able to bar it almost immediately. My service provider say my PUK has also been barred (?) I'm not to sure what that means. What I'm most worried about is people accessing private things like texts and photos. Would they still be able to do this?
