No Crusty Bread

I have a brie en croute i want to eat today. don't have any crusty bread to dip in it, but dont fancy going out in the snow. I have a normal white sliced loaf - how could i cook it/prepare it so i have something to dip in the brie?

Just toast it.

Take the crusts off and quarter. A splash of olive oil in the frying pan. Dice some garlic and lightly fry the bread.

Are you serious? A grown person asking how to prepare bread so that they can dip it into something? lol!
Try toasting it - that means finding a heat source, either a 'toaster' (google it) or finding the 'grill' setting on your oven. Put the bread either under the grill or in your 'toaster' until crispy and golden brown.
This is useful for preparing bread to dip in a variety of food items such as boiled eggs (I have a recipe if you want one)

yuck - i don't toast soldiers for boiled eggs - the egg doesn't penetrate toast in the same way it penetrates bread. it's very wrong!

Can you not just leave a bit loaf out on a plate for three or four hour to harden?

Melba toast is better than normal toast, imo.

Cut into fingers lightly brushed with garlic butter then bake on a rack in the oven to dry it out.
Or dip apple slices in it instead

Melba toast is easy to make lightly toast a slice of bread remove the crust then gently cut through the middle so you now have 2 slices now either retoast or bake till crisp

Try 5 mins you will just need to keep an eye on it for the first one as an experiment

I'd cut the crust off and toast as normal. Then you have to split it by going through the middle of the toast. It doesn't really matter if you mess it up and you're going to dip it anyway. Makes it look rustic :-)

I'm still slightly perturbed at the thought of limp soldiers, don't they buckle at the knees when dipped ;-) ?
