In the usual way, I double-clicked a file in my Documents folder to open it and the message is. 'Can't find C\Users etc. Make sure you have typed the name correctly then try again'.
This applies to all files in the Doc folder.
What has gone wrong?

I've made no changes / updates of any kind since working on the doc last worked on about 24 hours previously. It's one that is updated every couple of days and has been for 6 months or so since I bought the computer.
The same problem applies to all docs in my Document folder.

PS. I use Word.
Would a "system restore" do any good !!! Just a thought ..... ??
It's always worth checking the disc - disc C in this case. Display the computer and right-click on C drive > choose Properties > Tools > error checking > check now. The top option will be pre-selected, so run that - Being drive C you will have to close the computer and it will do the check automatically when you restart. If that doesn't do the job repeat the process but tick both options on the error-check. This will take longer but checks the disc and replaces any bad sectors with spares. Depending on the size of your disc this can take hours and the computer will be unusable whilst it it being done, so choose your time carefully.
isnt it just a question of re-associating your documents with Word. You may have already tried this but go to your document folder and right click a word document and select open with Word, then click the box "always do this for word documents"

I was recommended to contact an IBM employee and he tried but failed to cure the bug. Then he found that others were having the same problem. After nearly 2 hours on the phone + Team Viewer, reinstalling and whatnot he has managed to get things back to normal.
Thanks all for your suggestions.
