renewed my contract with EE, and they promised and delivered a new router and installed it for free, which was good. Only thing is the speed seems
as slow and takes a full 5 minutes or more to open anything.
i have a relatively good but old computer could this be the reason everything is slow..

Ah, a Dell Inspiron is a laptop is it. Ok cable from laptop to router, or wireless ? I'd suggest using a cable to fairly check the connection speed. Otherwise the issue might be the wireless connection.

i could tilly, but its a load of hassle as it would have to be somewhere like PC world, the nearest being a bus ride away. I will get onto EE later and see if i can't prise some more info from them and make a point of telling them i am not a happy bunny.

anyway that it from me, have a good day everyone and thanks for the informative info.
As said by bhg481..."If you've been upgraded to fibre those speeds are poor; you should get 2 or 3 times the download speed."

Click the following and scroll down the page to see that the average speed for EE Standard Fibre is 36Mbps :-

Also it would help to have the information as suggested above ^^
by Old_Geezer. He has given a good link to help you find the information. :-

I am just wondering if your machine is living with a bug of some sort or other Have you got Virus Protection and Malware scans available to you?.

I suggest that you keep updating us on this thread and, from all the free advice available on AB, someone might well come up with a solution to your problem.

EE have put it back to me that i have an old computer, and that i should have it cleaned out, whatever that means. They said i am getting via the new router 35/36 speed, if you understand that. But its all so slow.
Mine is a Dell Inspiron. Had very little trouble with it. Vera had the same model, which I still have.
Our grandson is an electronics whizzkid. I phone him. 'What have you done with it now granfer?'
'I dunno'. Is my usual reply. He sorts it in seconds.
Emmie, I don't think you've said if your computer was slow before the new router was installed. Has it changed simply because of the supposed upgrade or was it already slow & you expected the upgrade to improve it?
Question Author
i wish i had kin to sort it out, but they live long way away. will have to ask a friend what she thinks if i see her this week.
Question Author
it was slow before, press the start button then wait sometimes ten minutes for it to load, doesn't seem right.
so i was expecting it to be faster now that i am paying a higher premium.
Something wrong indeed emmie. Mine loads in seconds.
Emmie, have a google and see if you can find a local computer repair shop. Don't go to PC World. We have a local shop, within walking distance, but there is another computer repair company close by who will come and collect the laptop and bring it back when repaired.
Pretty sure it's your machine then - probably clogged up with too much stuff in memory, needing defragmenting , etc. etc. Get someone who knows to give it the once over then install a free clean-up utility (I use advanced systemcare) and run it regularly.
I got the impression yesterday that it was just your internet which was slow. If it's the whole computer then it's time it was given a good clear out. Free software such as Malwarebytes ans Ccleaner tidy up registry problems etc; it's probably also worth doing a check on your hard discby clicking on the Windows icon at the bottom of your desktop screen and choosing "Computer". Right-click drive C, choose "Properties" and the "Tools" tab. Do an error check, ticking both options. You will have to close your computer and when you restart it it will do the check, which may take a long time.

so an update of where we are, or not as they case seems.
EE say i should be getting 35/36 mbps not the poor ones i am currently getting. So they advised i phoned Dell support, which i did and he basically said that its well out of warranty which it is, being around 10 years old i think, but its still serviceable only the speed has me going round the bend. Dell tech support suggested i buy a new machine. As they don't support Windows 7, and couldn't be of much use. I got some guy in India who was difficult to understand, so its back to AB i'm afraid.
As suggested above emmie, install and run ccleaner and malwarebytes, and folow bhg's advice in 08.11 post. Thies should 'clean up' the PC of unnecessary files etc. which may slow it down.
If you can't or won't get someone who is computer savvy to check out your current machine then I'm afraid you may have to get a new one.

Sadly that may not have been necessary and possibly your old machine would have been OK without the EE upgrade if properly maintained.
