Playing Music On My Phone

Here's a wierd one. I've got an Alcatel phone running on Android. I've copied loads of music onto a memory thingy and put it in the phone.

There's an app to play music. Oddly, it won't play any small music files. It appears to be anything less than a 1000mb. The files also don't show up on the phone.

However, if I attach the phone to my laptop, the files are displayed.

How do I get the phone to play these files?

Can anyone explain it?

Thanks in advance

download a different music player, vlc off google play is good, i like playerpro and blackplayer ex, there are free versions but some have adds, but they are so cheap to buy pro versions £1 or two but worth it.
What format do the music files have to be in? I used to have one that only played .mp3 files, despite the memory card showing loads of files in .wma format, so those files had to be converted before playing.

Thanks for the answers. I thought it might be a conversion problem, but I've converted everything to the correct format and it still doesn't work.
A new app is called for methinks.
