I am curious to know how high a sycamore in my garden is. I know how to do it using trig. How can I measure the angle to the top of the tree without instruments?

Thanks Mamy. The home made clinometer was interesting.A term I'm not familiar with.Sounds American!
Hmmm... I think you should wait until autumn/winter. The pictures show that otherwise one may be fooled by the foliage growing on the side, and measure the angle to that, rather than the top. Perhaps you should climb the tree with a tape measure or plumb bob ;-)

Thanks for the suggestion OG.I'm afraid that my tree climbing days are long gone.Sounds like a job for my grandson. His Dad has had him up chimneys for years so he should manage it!
