I've just managed to insert an audio CD into my lap top. Closed the lid but nothing. How do I get it to play? In words of one letter, please.

Have you put it in the correct side up? (this answer is from a complete technophobe who would probably do that)
Can you try taking it and then putting it back in
When you put in a CD the computer should launch whatever application it uses to play the CD. What is your lappies default programme for audio CDs is it windows media player or something like?
when you click on My Computer does it show a D drive or something similar- if so, it may show your disk, then click on this
On iTunes, if you have it, the pulldown menu for Control should say Eject Disc...
Go to My computer, right click on your CD drive (usually D: ) and click open

Seems to be working now, although very faint. Could be my PC, it was quite cheap so I probably bought a crock of the proverbial. Yes, the volume is set to 100%.

Sometimes having "exclusive mode" enabled "blocks" the audio CD so try disabling "exclusive mode":
Right-click the speaker icon in the Notification area of the Taskbar. Playback devices, click on "Speakers" under the Playback tab, Properties, Advanced then remove the checkmark in front of "Allow applications to take exclusive control of this device" OK
If that has no effect you can re-enable "exclusive mode".
Open AutoPlay by clicking the Start button Picture of the Start button, and then clicking Control Panel. In the search box, type autoplay, and then click AutoPlay.
Do one of the following:
To turn AutoPlay on, select the Use AutoPlay for all media and devices check box.
To turn AutoPlay off, clear the Use AutoPlay for all media and devices check box.
Click Save.

At some point in the next 15 minutes I am going to slit my throat. I am trying to follow Crap's advice. i am assuming the the start button is the funny 4 paned window at the extreme left of the task bar. Clicking on that gives me no option for control panel so cannot proceed further. Gates, may you rot in hell! You and your Win 10!!!
Jackdaw33 - under not circumstances slit your throat! ABers will sort your problem. :-)
if you have win 10 just type autoplay in the search the web and windows box

Thanks all, but it is now too late in the evening for me. All I get is autoplayer can't play this because you don't have a sound device. Anyway, problem solved. If I wish to play a CD I shall do so via my CD audio player, and raspberries to Gates!!
Simply solved tomorrow :-)
Step 1: Launch Start Menu, search for Device Manager and then launch it.

Step 2: Expand Sound and audio devices.

Step 3: Right-click on the current sound driver and choose uninstall.

Step 4: Finally, click on Scan for hardware changes and the updated driver will be automatically installed.
