No. I have a Kindle paperwhite and followed the instructions. The only confusion was that I expected the update to take place immediately and nothing happened, so I tried again. Still no joy so I read the instructions carefully which said to make sure WiFi was on ie, aeroplane made off, and then leave the Kindle switched on and connected to the charger overnight. I did that last night and came down this morning to find a message saying the software update had completed successfully.

Thanks bhg, I'll tell my other half to give that a go. He keeps getting a message telling him it doesn't need an update despite receiving an email telling him it does, and by a certain date too.
I have a Kindle Fire and the browsery bit was updated recently. 'Silk' I think that it is called. Some improvements but many things made more "user unfriendly."
ethandron - I think the email is a general one to all Kindle ownners. If you look at the link they provide it tells you exactly which models should need an update as well as the software level that your machine needs to have.

Apparently that's part of the problem, he doesn't know which model his is. It's not backlit or touchscreen, any idea how he can find out?
No problems here Fire Hd 3rd generation or Paperwhite
My email begins "Your Kindle Paperwhite (5th Generation) requires an important software update to continue downloading e-books and using Kindle services. ", which gives me the model.
It then goes on to say "Visit our help page for a complete list of impacted devices" and gives a link to click on.
That will give you all the information you need and also gives instructions for how to do the ugrade.
I knew nothing about this - have just noticed the item on the BT news website. Haven't had an email. I tried to follow the instructions; it appears to be connected to wi-fi, but nothing seems to be happening; no messages of any kind. Mine is a kindle 3rd generation.
Are you sure he hasn't already received the update - it happens if you sync the Kindle from the menu. That's how I got mine (although I didn't realise it at the time, I was syncing for another reason).
The model number on mine is on the back at the bottom. I put that into google which gave me the generation. Looked on Amazon help page where it told me the level the machine needed. When I checked the machine it was correct, so must have done it automatically.
