Broadband Speed Is Laughable

I've just done a speed test and my results are:

Download Speed is 0.14 MB/second.
Upload Speed is 1.15 MB/second.

I'm with BT and have a router upstairs in my bedroom. Using an IPad.

What can I do to improve this? Thanks.

This may be a stupid question but you are using another ethernet cable to connect to the router from the laptop and not unplugging the one which is already plugged in? Sorry if that's sounds patronising but sometimes the obvious can be the answer. :-)

That's all the proof you need to show that it's definitely a fault with BT's equipment (either with their router or, probably more likely, with the connection to your home). So you can definitely call them out without worrying about the £130 charge that they'll almost certainly threaten you with if it had turned out to be a fault with your own devices. (The repair must be free of charge because they're obliged to provide you with a proper broadband service).

Not patronising at all, Fitzer. But, no.

Just been on the phone to India for three quarters of an hour, all told. A very nice young man was very helpful and has worked out that it's a fault between the Exchange and my house, thank goodness. They are coming on Monday to sort it.

When I told him that my router was upstairs, he got me to transfer it to where the main line comes into the house. He said that if the engineer told me to move it, he may charge me £139, as he has stepped into the house.

All I have to do now is, work out how to find a neat and safe way to accommodate all the wires, now in the hall.

Good luck with BT. I recently spent 1 hour on the 'chat line' before being upgraded to the 'Level 2 Team' . Then waited for 72 hours for a call from them which lasted over an hour, then they finally agreed to send an engineer. Yes they threatened me with a bill if the fault was mine. Engineer quickly identified that the original Fibre Optic installation was at fault. Got the lot (including phone line) re-wired. Total time from first complaint to resolution = 10 days.
@dannyk13....Thanks for having posted further and clarified your position. I am Not a real 'Techie' and far from the likes of .........too many ABers for me to list here.

Please smile when I say that I am unable to add anything further to what mikey has said but confirm what he has posted..

I am yet to hear of anyone who has been charged by BT for an Engineer's visit.
It appears from my personal experience on the matter that the published charge is to put-off people from requesting a visit which may prove to be unnecessary. Any serious complaint is free of any charge which appears to rest in the hands of the visiting Engineer.

Chrissa...so the fault was in the line ! I suspected as much. By the way, if you only access your router by wifi and not directly by cable, it really doesn't matter too much where it is sited, as long as you can get a good signal from it.

You haven't said but I suspect that this is a recent problem for you. There is a pair of copper, maybe aluminium wires, coming to your house from the green cabinet, and this where the fault nearly always lies. Have you considered going on to BT Infinity One ? Its not that more expensive than you have at the moment and is well worth while having.

Let us know on Monday what happens !

The Openreach engineer has just left and my download speedos now, 6.08mbps. Yaaaaaay.

He didn't need to go to the cabinet, but got the exchange to reset something. Fitted a new little box in the hall and so now I can watch vids and things without watching the interminable circle going round and round.

I am one, happy bunny.

That's great news chrissa. There's every chance that the speed will stabilise above the 6.08 which you now have.

We had very slow connection

BT would come, reset something at the exchange, speed would pick up then go again.

One engineer changed the socket to the new type with hidden master connection - again improved for a while

4th engineer was going to replace something in the exchange, but phoned his colleagues in Edinburgh first. Sky boxes were ruled out, but we had a freeview recorder that had NO means of connecting to the phone line. On advice of his colleague he switched it off. As soon as he did he noticed a change on his meter. Put box back on - and meter changed again.

Thus it was the freeview recorder interfering with the broadband!

He told us he'd been to one house where the speed dropped the same time everyday. Turns out it was kids coming home from school, turning on a tv in a house about 1 - 1.5miles away!
