Broadband Speed Is Laughable

I've just done a speed test and my results are:

Download Speed is 0.14 MB/second.
Upload Speed is 1.15 MB/second.

I'm with BT and have a router upstairs in my bedroom. Using an IPad.

What can I do to improve this? Thanks.

Are you sure that you've got those the right way round? (ADSL upload speed is typically around 10% of download speed, not the other way round).

Have you got a desktop or laptop computer that you can connect to your router via an Ethernet cable? If so, do so and run the speed test using that device. If you still get a lousy speed then the problem is with your BT connection; if you get a far better speed your iPad problem is with the wireless connection.

If you're convinced that it's a wireless problem, try changing the channel on your BT router:

Oh my goodness that is a terribly slow. We have Fibre Optic and get 43.24 Mpbs download and 17.81 upload. and thus is Spain!

Yes. That way you'll know that any problems with your wireless connection (or with your laptop's wifi adapter) are immaterial. If the speed is still low it will definitely be a problem at BT's end.

crissa...if you plug your computer directly into the router, you should improve the speed, but it doesn't sound as if its going to be very much faster.

It sounds as if you are on the very edge of your Exchange area, and therefore have a high loop resistance from the Exchange to you house.

Have you checked whether you can get BT Infinity ? "Fibre to the Cabinet" is being installed in most Telephone Exchange areas and it could be that its available in your area. Look out for a new green cabinet on the side of the road. It will have louvers in it and will probably have a large advertising panel stuck to its front door.

Alternatively, go to the BT website and make enquiries there....put your telephone number in and it will tell if Infinity is available or not. If it isn't yet, it probably will be soon, and you can registers your interest on the site.

If you want any more info, please don't hesitate to ask...I am a ex-BT engineer !

First thing to do is to turn the router off for a couple of minutes - it may well get a btter connection when it restarts.

Right. When I connected me laptop to the router with the ethernet cable, the router didn't like it at all. Red and yellow flashing lights etc and no connection.

Connected it without the cable and got a connection. The speed was still terrible.

There are no faults reported in my area, Hans.

I've switched it off and on again. No change. :'(
Probably got a faulty router, chrissa.
I have 54.41 & 3.10 Mbps. Is that good?

I have 40.3 D/load and 11.2U/load (BT) I'm happy!

I think the router is faulty too, tonyav. I'll brace myself for an interminable phone all with BT.
Chrissa....it sounds like a faulty router to me as well, but it could still be something else. I have been with BT for 40 years, 20 years as a PC user. I have had only two problems since I changed over to Broadband about 5 years ago, but BT sorted them out very quickly. You will be connected through to a call centre in India but you should find them very polite. Just be patient...they will need to do fault-finding tests and they will need you to cooperate fully. it down by the router, when you call them !

@dannyk13&Baldric....You guys are Not helping matters by telling us what good speeds you are getting. The OP has a problem and Mikey is giving good advice.

It certainly is beginning to look like a faulty Router. Have patience and the Indian folk will sort it all out; very politely, if you keep your cool.
