If you have a wireless router you can set up your upstairs computer to "share" its files, then by opening "network" on your laptop you should be able to "see" your upstairs machine and get to the files. Depending on your operating system you may need passwords on accounts.
You need to set-up a network, see Windows Help for more details for your particular needs.

Bear in mind that both Computers need to be on and sharing.
can you not get the Info you want from the Laptop? is it faulty?
Not if it's on the desktop's hard drive, TWR.

That was quick it took me longer to type it out.Could you please explain where to look to "share" files. Thanks!
Without checking I think it is all done by right clicking on the disk icon and looking through the menus.
Is Windows your operating systems? What versions?
Windows button/Help and Support type 'sharing network' press Enter and take your pick of the results
Open computer, right-click on a drive > properties > sharing
If both computer are Windows 7 or Windows 8 you can set up a Homegroup to share files.
