forgot to mention. the pc that is connected to ntl is running windows ME and the one i want to add runs XP

You just need a router for your modem to plug into.  This will allow more cables to be connected from the router to more PCs (usually four unless you get a larger router).

It won't matter which OS you use as each PC will be configured seperately for the router.

just get a Ether-net Cable and Make one connect to the internet through the other. ME is abit old isnt it? I suggest you upgrade it to XP. ME was one of the buggyest OS's Ever Made by Microsoft and was the lowest selling too.
I am on NTL and use an INEXQ ISW054t router. It works great and was very easy to setup. One piece of advice: if you currently attach to your cable modem using an ethernet cable you need to turn off the modem approx 8 hours before connecting the router so it "forgets" the MAC address. I had to phone up NTL to get that information after I tried swapping machines around. Also, I believe MTIH1992 is alluding to internet connection sharing which is not as good as a router.
MTIH1992 also forgot to mention that both PCs will need to be LAN enabled via fitted PCI LAN cards if the motherboards do not have onboard LAN and the cable will need to be a crossover type RJ45 not an ordinary patch cable.
I have NTL Cable Broadband and currently have 3 laptops set up around the house. At firs I had absolutely no idea what to do, but thanks to help from other ABers,it was fairly easy.I bought a wireless package that was recommended by NTL on their website, and is ideal for beginners. The package was not cheap (99) but it came with everything you need except for the wireless card, which I did not need because my laptop has built in WLAN.The name of the manufacturer is Actiontec, and you can look on their website for the 'wireless kit'.One word of warning, remember to set up you connection securely so that your neighbours cannot use your connection.
I also have a wireless setup for a multi-PC/Laptop network based on a D-Link modem/router but the cable method suggested by MTIH1992 and myself is more suitable where both PCs are in the same room, with no dropped connections and costing less than 20 even if the LAN cards are required.
