The size of my EHD from my previous post is 500GB which is now full.I have been given 2TB one as a present.Do I just instal it and start from scratch or do I transfer all the info from my smaller one first and then continue. If the latter how is it done please,I'm a bit wary of doing something wrong and losing everything . Thanks.

You might just as well start from scratch with the new EHD.

When you're happy you've got a good copy, format the old one to clear it and then use it to keep a third copy of your very important files by dragging and dropping selected files/directories to it.

You can't have too many copies of important files.

Thanks bhg481 If you suggest that I start from scratch on the new one, what would I copy the old one onto, bearing in mind it has 500GB of info?
You can have more than one external hard drive on the go at the same time.

I have several drives, all with different data on them, and I just plug the one in I need.

Just leave the existing data on the 500Gb drive, then start putting new data on the 2TB drive.
Whatever you like. Although if you intend to connect both permanently I'm unsure of the value of moving stuff.

Thanks VHG,I'm a bit thick to-night,if I want to save something from the old EHD ,I assume that I need to have that on screen ,how do I drag it to the new one?
I'm getting confused as to what you're trying to do.
In your original post you said that your old EHD was used for backups. Therefore the only data on it is a copy of data on your main disc.
When you copy all your main data onto your new EHD your old one becomes redundant, as does the data on it, so you can do what you want with the disc. You do not need to move any data from it as your data will exist in two plces, your main disc and the new EHD. As I said earlier, I would use it for an extra copy of VERY important data.
