What Would You Do ?

My Partner lent some money to his friends wife four weeks ago after she rang him and said her benefit money hadn't gone in the bank and she needed to get his birthday present. My partner took it straight around and s promised to pay him back in a couple of days once her benefits when in her account. He has seen her twice socially since then and each time she said she had forgot to bring the money with her. He texted her on Sunday and asked that she dropped the money in the next day and she said she had lost her purse but would drop it in on Monday after she had been to the bank ! It never arrived and now she is ignoring his calls. Her husband doesn't know anything about it and he would be furious if he did. My Partner is saying he is going to just have to write it off as it doesn't look like she has any intention of paying it back. I am really annoyed that she has done this to him as it wasn't just a small amount of money. I think he should tell her husband but he refuses to. What do you think ?

I'd be inclined to write it off, but would find it difficult to socialise with her in the future....

Yes me too Baldric . Her husband works away and is on really good money but my OH has just told me that he pays all the bills buys all the food etc and she had no access to his money as she ran up a £13k debt on credit cards a few years back. !

Craft . I wont ever be in her company again which in it self will cause her husband to ask questions.

I would go round to see her in front of her hubby and say what has happened and how she keeps promising to pay it back, but it never happens. Maybe the end of the friendship, but if it's a large sum, I think it's a risk worth taking.

viv that's exactly what I want to do but me and my partner will fall out if I do that . He said her husband would be mortified that she has asked him for money.

Tony I have just said the exact same thing ! She has family , sisters daughter etc so I bet she owes them too.

Write it off be b*ggered ! Her husband needs to know ASAP...who knows how many other innocents have to been conned in this way. You have said how much the load was and I suspect it wasn't a huge amount, but the principle remains the same.

it was for £150 , not a huge amount however not just peanuts either.

she is on disability benefits so I don't think it matters that he earns a good wage,

I'd text her and tell her that you need the money back as its left you very short, and that if she can't pay it back then not to worry, you'll ask her husband for it as you're sure he won't mind repaying it.
No point beating about the bush with people like this and she has no right to expect you not to drop her in it.
