So if say you have Malwarebytes running and up to date,and dont open any e-mails that you dont know who they are from,that should be OK?

Not that there is anything in my bank,nor do I use online banking,I just love my laptop and want to protect her!

What about IPads? Are they at risk, too?
Is it safe to shop on line now ? This is all rather worrying.
It might be wiser to use a credit card rather than a debit card for on-line shopping.
Why Sandy ? I only have a debit card {no credit card }
I'm far from being an expert on any of this but using your debit card could give hackers access to your money.
I'm sure there'll be more knowledgeable ABers along to give us more advice.

I don't have online banking but do buy stuff with a debit card on-line. I don't have a credit card.

If we simply DO NOT OPEN any attachments from unknown emails should we be safe? or can they get in from an email 'friend' who has been infected?

No. This is a Windows Virus. It does not attack iOS.
