My iPad mini has gone dead this morning. It was charged yesterday ( it took around 6 hours to fully charge from 9% ) and was working afterwards. The screen is black and there is no response when the on/off button is pressed. When power is connected, a battery icon shows a narrow red line, presumably representing a small battery use since charging. Any insight into yhis problem? Thanks.

Have you tried a reboot? Hold the Sleep and Home button down for about 10 seconds until you see the Apple logo. Ignore the red slider.
The small red line indicates it has very low battery power and hence it won't turn on until it reaches about 10% (I think), either
1. You've somehow switched off the auto power off
2. There is a rogue app running which is draining the battery
3. You've got a problem which needs fixing
Once it's charged up a bit and turned on, double press the home button and close all running apps, then try as per Jomlett's suggestion

Thank you both.I reconnected the power supply as advised and appear to be back to normal. The battery is recharging at a much faster rate than yesterday. A couple of days ago I installed an upgrade to Facebook and ended up with two Facebook icons, one of which was in its 'old' position, a dull blue in colour and unresponsive. The other was in a new position, a much brighter blue and active. Following my recharging today the dull one has gone and its place taken by the 'normal' icon. I haven't yet rebooted. Thanks again.
That sounds like the possible problem, I'd guess that it was constantly trying to download/upgrade Facebook, glad it's back to normal
