My desk top PC suddenly slowed down about a week ago for no apparent reason. I've emptied the cache & History, phoned Talk Talk. They sent me a new reuter but PC is still painstakingly slow as is my sisters lap top that she uses in a different room to me. I've been with TT for a couple of years and been very happy with them but! Any technical advice out there?!

Is your pc connected to the router by ethernet lead and what version of Windows are you using?

Try this and come back with some figures of upload and download.

You say the PC is slow but do you mean Broadband (internet) is slow, they are not the same thing.

If your sister's laptop is also slow then it sounds like a problem with your broadband or router.

As slackalice says above, test your broadband speed.

Do it more than once as it can very depending on time of day or day of week (plus other factors).

If it is much lower than TalkTalk say you should be getting they need to test the line.
Snap potty. I'm having exactly the same problem. TT has also sent me a new router and it is a bit better but not a lot. The problem is I keep losing the connection. I'm on a Mac and using Safari but get the same when I'm using FF. With the old router, when it was working I was getting download speed of 10.3, with the new router, when it's working I get only 9.8 I was going to persevere for a few more days and see how it went because I don't want to have to pay for BT to come out. I'm in East Sussex potty, where are you?

Hi, I'm in Kent by the way, (if that makes any difference?!). I'm using Windows Vista & am wireless. The speed check stated the up load as 0.788 mb/s and the download as 8.05mbs. Next question!

Standard advice for where secondary phone sockets ARE in use is that every other telephone device in the house (including Sky+, if you have it) needs to have its phone wire plugged into an ADSL filter and then the ADSL filter plugs into the wall socket.

@potty64

Can you clarify for us that 8Mb internet speed is in accordance with the TalkTalk tariff you are currently on?

If so, can we assume that by "Slow PC" you mean that all aspects of its performance are impaired? Any of the following:-

Slow to respond to keyboard?
Slow to respond to mouse movement?
Slow to respond to mouse clicks?
Non-internet applications run slow?
Internet web browser runs slow?

Also please let us know the last time you visited Microsoft Windows Update site (or do you allow it to install Windows updates automatically?)
