I know I'll need a masonry drill bit for this. Are rawlplugs required to get a good fixing? If so are standard rawlplugs suitable?

I'm putting up a bit of guttering downpipe and this is for fixing the brackets to the wall.

I agree with Jake. Standard red plugs with size 8 screws.
...also, there's no need to drill directly into the brick. You're not putting a massive load on the wall, and, besides, drilling into brick can be hard work. Drill into the mortar between the bricks. It's quicker, easier, and the fixing will be quite adequate.
My personal preference is for Fischer wall plugs over Rawlplugs. They seem tougher and less prone to splitting.

Thanks all. Will get all the bits from Wickes ; this is a weekend job!
Personally I use stainless steel screws for putting anything up outside - don't get the rust stains down the paintwork years later.
A pet hate of mine.
