different ip addresses,/mutiplayer games

i ssem to be getting different ip addresses, as i want to play mutiplayer games- which one should i use ,is it the one where i type Cmd that brings up ms-dos screen?( which is different from the ones i had written downfrom google searching)
also does anybody know of a website guide to playing multiplayer games as it appears far to complicated, and carmageddon is the only success- the others do nothing at all whether i want to host or join

i used to have the same problems getting any games to run, i stuck to half life team fortress the most as it was the best i could find, then i bought an xbox and havent looked back at the pc for gaming since then!
