i had this trouble yesterday thinking my laptop had had its day, and not work any more. I was gutted, untill i eventually remembered advice given on here a long while ago. I held the off button for a 10 --20 seconds and hey presto --no more trouble and now working fine.

My Toshiba satellite had the cursor (pointer) frozen. The answer was to take the battery out; I left mine twenty minutes out; and then press 'on' for thirty seconds. That worked; no other method suggested online did. Maybe this is a magic cure for all Toshiba satellites !
@methyl.
It was weird as i just couldnt turn it off or on. Totally stuck.
Didnt have a clue and wanted to chuck laptop in a bin. haha.
Thank you and Abers for the good advice or I'd have been stuck x

Thanks ... methyl .... its Tosh Satellite L650D It had been left for a couple of hours open with applications minimized .... so may have hibernated. Had unplugged the charger so now it's totally dead battery wise ... lights are:

Off
Solid white
Flashing orange
