Laptop Problem

Hi, I have a Toshiba satellite L630 - 16k 13" screen (smaller keyboard) laptop.

When I press certain keys e.g., the letters O and I, a window called 'Developers Tools' pops up and everything goes crazy.

Any ideas please ??????

Does this only occur in your browser e.g. Internet Explorer?

If so, try download and install another browser such as FireFox or Opera to see if the problem stops.

Thanks you for your answer pinkboyid. its not so bad when i type in the notepad but the space bar produces a - symbol. I have restored the computer but still no joy. I will try another browser.


p.s, I have run the virus scanner which hasnt detected any issues.

Maybe the "Fn" key is a bit sticky?

Thanks- for the reply stoofur. I tried the FN key which seems to work oK on all other function and given it a good clean etc but still having probs. It would make sense for it to that that - would be the problem as the on screen keyboard works fine and so does a plug in k- board. I will keep trying.

try creating another user account and logon as the new user and then check if problem remains or not!

(Yep, I also like the Opera Browser, use it all the time)

Ok, next thing to check.

If you have not already done this, boot up into Safe Mode with Networking and test if problem ceases.

To access Safe Mode, power on and whilst its booting up keep pressing the F8 key and that will eventually present you with the Safe Mode selection menu, then select the option "Safe Mode with Networking"

Ok, in trying to determine where the message is coming from lets assume its something to do with IE which has a 'Developers Tools' add-on facility, so we do a check to see if it is installed or not.

This will require the use of 'REGEDIT' which needs to be used with some care to ensure the registry integrity stays ok.

If ok with this, from the 'Windows Start>search programs and files', in the search window enter REGEDIT, press enter and if Windows requests to run REGEDIT select Yes.

- Click on and expand 'HKEY_CURRENT_USER'
- Click and expand 'Software'
- Click and expand 'Microsoft'
- Click and expand 'Internet Explorer'

Do you see an entry in the expand list named 'IEDevTools' ?

At this stage you can close regedit. If IEDevTools does exist, a later stage will be to try to disable it.

When i pess the letter- I, key it sets any program to Full- screen mode

and now only O letter- opens the developers- tools

if i press 4, it displays that number in browser address bar

plug in usb keyboard works fine though

Well, if I read you last posts correctly, so we do have an IEDevTools in the registry, keys are still playing up but an external keyboard works just fine!

Well since an external usb board seems to work ok it makes one initially wonder if the on-board keyboard has some sort of hardware problem.

But since there is an IEDevTools entry in the registry, lets try disabling it!

Do the registry access as per previous post.
then following on:

- In the registry widow area that has the columns 'Name,Type,Data' right click in a blank area and select 'New>DWORD (32-Bit) Value' and in the small box that is created type the text Disabled and press enter.
- Double click the new 'Disabled' entry
- Enter a value of 1 and press enter

Exit Regedit.
At this stage it might be worth restarting your system before checking if problem has got any better or not.

Odd it is. I'm wondering if the windows on-board keyboard driver is somehow damaged and when you plug in an external board its using a different driver.

If you have not already tried, run a Hard Disk file system check via a CHKDSK program.
- 'Windows Start>All Programs>Accessories>'
- Right mouse click on 'Command Prompt' and select 'Run as Administrator'
- A command prompt window will open up. Type into that window the text CHKDSK /F and press enter
- It will ask if you want to run at next startup, answer 'y'
- Restart your system and CHKDSK will automatically run at startup. Let it run until completed and it will then start the system. Lets see what that does, if anything!
