I am shortly going on to broadband - I only require the basic home set up- I am looking towards Pipex an d wonder if anyone has any experience of Pipex. I am not familiar with the inner workings of my computer and wonder what is involved in installing and setting up the connection.I use Microsoft XP Home, with Micro SP2. Any recommendations or suggestions would be helpful.

I use Pipex and have found it to be very reliable.  I have only needed to phone there tech support once but found them very helpful. (There was a queue however of about 10 minutes).

You will get the option of recieving an adsl modem with 2 microfilters, Or just 3 Microfilters if you plan to use a router of some sort.  The adsl modem connects to your pc via usb and comes with an installation disk and full setup instructions (Very easy).  They also give you full instructions for configuring a router (If you want to use one) but for this you will require a network card in your pc.  The microfilters split the data and voice on your phone line and just simply plug into the wall where your phone currently goes and you plug your phone into the filter.  If you want any more info or clarification just ask.

Whatever you do DO NOT GO TO TISCALI !!!!

I was with them for years and being ripped off and now it's 27 days since I cancelled and they keep telling me lies (they said 15 - 18 days to have my line released). I've now reported them to OFCOM. They do not support migration, and call centre in India is useless.

Have a look on www.ispreview.co.uk www.net4nowt.com and www.blagger.com for reviews of ISP's.

I am currently on naims monthly dial up. I will go on their 512kb ADSL (or 1mb).. they have a 3 month initial contract then it's on a monthly basis (NOT a 12 month contract). Naims adsl has NO DOWNLOAD LIMITS (You may notice some have 1gb - 15gb per month), and they DO NOT BLOCK PORTS (tiscali do). so you can use P2P programs like WinMX and Limewire.

Customer support has been excellent with naims, a webform I filled in, got an e-mail answer within 30 mins, and I phoned them and left a msg, within the hour they called me back (apologised for the delay).. then they called me again the next day.

www.naims.co.uk Go check them out.. I'm glad I did.
