Computer not working :o(

My son's computer seems to have developed what I think must be a major problem overnight. It was working fine yesterday and when he switched it on this morning, although it has power and the light and fan come on, the monitor/keyboard/mouse are receiving no signal. The usb plug in wireless thingy lights up so it is obviously receiving power, but there are no lights on the keyboard or mouse and no signal to the screen.

Obviously difficult to know what is wrong as there are no error messages to check.

Anyone have any clues????

Thanks :o)

First check that all leads are well seated just incase you have a loose connection.
There is also the possibility of a Power Unit failure which supplies power to the different things connected to your Computer such as Keyboard, Monitor, mouse etc

Hi redman - I took all the cables and connections out and replaces them to make sure they were in properly, the monitor is a tv too and it works fine on its own.

If it is a power unit failure, is that fixable/expensive?
Question Author
Hi fender I did try that too - well i took the side off and blew some dust of and prodded a bit - not really sure what I was looking for to be honest - there were some cables that weren't connected but it looked like those were for other add ons that weren't built in. The PC has an enhanced graphics card so I tried to connect the screen to the other screen port and that didn't work either.
Power Units are not expensive to replace but there may be other causes which need exploring first. Is there another Power Switch located at back of PC like my PC has. Check Plug Fuses as well

thanks redman, the PC has power so I know that is fine and the tv/screen is fine, and the usb slots will work as the wireless plug in works, so fairly sure it isn't a power problem per se.

fender, I am going to pretend I know what you mean and go and have another poke about :o)
Was it turned off properly last night or was it put in sleep mode? I find that when I put mine in sleep mode it's hard to get it back on sometimes. I have to hold down the power button for about 5 seconds- this either turns it on or turns it off (in which case I then start it up again as normal).
What is the monitor displaying? If anything?
Question Author
Factor, it was turned off completely with no issues last night.

alba - no signal to screen at all.
Monitor failure possibly if all else is working
oh foodoo. I know this is going to sound rude, but isn't meant to offend. Are all cables intact? No nibbles from unwanted guests?
One thing i find can be useful at times. When one switches off one can do so at the PC yet leave it plugged in at the wall. Sometimes it reboots properly if the power is disconnected for a few minutes and then reconnected for the reboot. May not help, but worth trying.

Since all 3 peripherals are having problems, it sounds lke a PC internal issue to me. Didn't get lots of beeps as it powered up, did you ?
Oh am I to understand you are using a form of USB hub ? If so, it might be wise to try leaving that out and plugging stuff directly into the PC if possible. I've had USB hub problems before now. Try to put together as simple a set up as possible and see if you can get that working first.

Hi guys, definitely nothing wrong with the monitor or the cables - the keyboard or mouse aren't working either, all cables etc are in fully and undamaged - by process of elimination, it must be something to do with the way the pc signals to the monitor/keyboard/mouse.
I was having problems last week, had to format disk and re-install Windows.

Urggh.

Old-G, I didn't get beeps at that time either. I like the sound of beeps.

Hi old geezer, yes we have tried to power down and switch back on, no beeps - not running through a usb hub, we have a usb wireless dongle that lights up when the pc is on - that is lighting up so confirms that there is no specific problem with the usb ports as such. I agree it must be an internal issue - think I am going to have to take it to a repair shop. :o(

Washing machine just decided to die too, and the boy's DSi gone this week and now have an excess to pay on the car as OH killed a deer with it the other week!! It never rains but it pours.........
Annie, things are only supposed to happen in 3's. Stop being greedy :( x

alba, I have the disks, but don't know how to reinstall if no signal etc.

p.s. just laughing at your unwanted guests comment - the cat has left me about 9 dead bodies in the last few weeks - brought in from outside I hasten to add!!! She brought in a live mouse last week and it took me two days to find and release it.

lol, just been speaking to the machine machine repair man. He obviously has an inflated idea of my husbands skills! He said - "has you husband checked the brushes?" - when I said I didn't think he would know what he was looking for, he said, "well, get him to take the motor out and bring it in to the shop and I'll check it over" Husband still laughing as he wouldn't know where the motor was....I just said "thanks, we'll get back to you" and now looking for a new one!!
