I am new to twitter and wondered what the difference is between retweet and replying?

A retweet means the tweet appears as it was, just copied under your name.

A reply lets you respond to a tweet.

If you retweet you are only copying someone elses tweet, to reply is to write your own tweet in response to someone's tweet. For example this is a reply but I could retweet your question above but it would show under my name.
