I have just installed Internet Explorer 9 and find that any popups or adverts apear in the top left hand corner of the screen, flickering on and off. It makes some facebook games unplayable, and obscures other elements of the page. I'm running windows7 - any advice on how to cure it- or failing that, how to switch back to IE8? (forgive me if i get he numbers wrong - they aren't my strong point. Whatever the new version of IE is)

Well unfortunately that's not really the soloution as it happens with facebook games and affects windows I actaully want to use..... Thanks anyway.

Anyone else having the same problem?
Why people keep recommending addons is beyond me .. when there is a simple mod you can do to stop all unwanteds without plugins.
Try the hosts file mod.
You can open the file and remove anything it blocks that you want (although it will not block legit popups)

I tried Internet Explorer 9 a while ago, and I didn't like it, so I went back to IE8. I didn't have the problems that you are having, but one or two features were missing. If you want to go back to IE8, try this link:
