Can I ask what the USB socket is supposed to be for? Just that usually you connect to the net with a cable connected to a LAN (local area network) socket.

you use the USB port if you have a USB modem. The LAN socket is used normally to connect to a LAN (ie a router or hub)

ISPs right now, for some reason I really don't understand, tend to send out modems with USB connections.
