Our planet has just been hit by the biggest solar storm since 2005. That's good news for aurora watchers but terrible news for radio amateurs, like me, who find short wave communication totally impossible under such conditions.

I tried to see the Northern Lights here in Suffolk in the early hours of the morning last night but, alas, the morning mist had already started to develop by then, so they weren't visible.
I've been out tonight too, walking up the road (accompanied by my three cats!) to where I hoped that they'd be visible but, again, no luck.
A copper I was talking to earlier today (or should that be 'yesterday' now?) showed me some photos that he'd taken of the lights last night, not far from where I live. (No, I wasn't under arrest! He was manning the police stand at a Polish Heritage Day in Ipswich, which I attended). They were certainly visible here in Suffolk, as this link shows

but I never got to see them. (I have seen them before though).
