Problems with Windows Quicklaunch

This is most odd

I am rebuilding my laptop after a reinstall of XP, and put the things I use most on the Quicklaunch toolbar - usually just by dragging and dropping a shortcut on the Quicklaunch

This was working fine, until I just tried to add another shortcut

Now Windows shows me the "not allowed" symbol when I try and drop.

I can drag things OFF the Quicklaunch but not ON to it (and my taskbar is NOT locked)

What has changed and how to I add more things to the Quicklaunch??

I imagine it's something stupidly simple - but I am foxed

Many thanks

What are you trying to add a shortcut to? and are you sure it's actually a shortcut (does it have a little arrow in the bottom corner?)

Oh yes - as a test I dragged a shortcut OFF the Quicklaunch (onto my desktop) and now I can't put it back!

I thought you could also duplicate Quicklaunch items by dragging them with SHIFT held down - I can't do that either

It's as if the Quicklaunch bar is locked (or at least "read only" somehow)

Or if I try and drag a program icon with ALT held, it's supposed to automatically create a shortcut. I can create shortcuts on the desktop, but not on Quicklaunch

How curious

I just rebooted as there were some pending Microsoft updates

Now Quicklaunch is behaving perfectly

Most odd
LOL...

IT rule 101..... Do a restart before investigating any problem.

I guess so - but when you've had the experience of a pc NOT rebooting it sort of puts you off reboots for a while
As a Linux user I also don't like rebooting, it's not required most of the time, but it is often quicker than trying to stop and start the appropriate services to clear a problem. with windows often a reboot is the only way to clear some things,

I refuse to reboot the gateway at work until unless I really have to, I'm aiming to beat the 720 day uptime for a computer in one of my mates challenges :)
Usually Windows Explorer with something like that.
Next time .. Open Task Manager .. Process .. Explorer .. close
File/New Task .. enter explorer.exe and OK.
Should work then.
