My friend has a PC and wants to discover whether it it is a 32 bit or 64 bit. He has searched the computer and cannot find this out. He is having difficulty installing a program called "Dragon Naturally Speaking" and if the PC is 64 bit this might present difficulties. Can anyone tell how to find out if it is 32 or 64 bit?

Naturally Speaking".
On mine I can get there via Control Panel> System&Maintenance> System. The info includes "32-bit operating system"
You've not stated which operating system he's using. Hopefully this will work for all versions of Windows:

Go to Start > Programs > Accessories > System Tools > System Information.

Look alongside 'System Type'. If you see 'x-86 based PC' it's a 32-bit computer. If you see 'x-64 based PC' it's a 64-bit computer.
