can you get any picture on the desktop?

with XP if you right-click on the desktop one of the menu items is "arrange icons by" and from there you get the option to "show desktop icons" or not

Open up the picture in paint. Select File then set as background. Tile will put duplicates covering the desktop or centered will put a single picture in the middle of the desktop. Simples!
