bootmgr missing

son's laptop (advent) Windows Xp had a hissy fit a couple of days ago. rebooted and above message appeared. All I can find on internet is "reinstall windows" but his laptop doesn't have a cd-rom drive. Is there anything that can be done? Thanks.

I don't know which model you have but read this article especially the section headed "recovery" it should help.
