Do you have a USB flash drive? You are probably best copying them to one of those then loading them on to your new computer. That would be the easiest way.

I think squarebears answer of using a USB stick is the best one.

This is assuming your old Win 98 computer HAS a USB slot and it works (I think some old versions of 98 did not suport USB).

Be careful of connecting two USB ports via a cable, it can blow your motherboard.

You need a SPECIAL USB cable to stop this happening.

If you cant get USB to work then if your 98 PC has a CD writer then use that.

If your 98 box does not have USB OR a CD Writer then best option is to remove the hard disk from the 98 box, put it in a external hard disk caddy, and use the USB connector to plug it in to your new XP PC.

You can then copy the files from the 98 hard disk onto your XP hard disk.

Thanks to everyone for their answers, I think i'll leave it untillI can get somebody who knows what they are doing to do it for me ....
connect both the computers to each other by the usb cable.
check the ip addresses of the computer.
try to ping the ip address of the computers.

create a folder on the computer. and shared in it by full permissions.

paste all the data in the shared folder

go to the laptop.
go to run type
\\ ip address of the computer. and press the enter key from the keyboard.

you will see the shared folder in the network.
copy all the data from the folder and paste the data into the laptop.

or you can use the file transfer wizard to transfer the data from one computer to the other computer.
go to the programs>accessories>system tools>file and settings transfer wizard click on this wizard.

a wizard will prompt and follow the path data will be transferred.

you can also transfer the data with the help of the usb flash drive or the external hard drive.

connect these drives to the computer and copy the data and than connect to the laptop and paste the data .

You need to connect both computer with a LAN cable.
After that you would have to create a files sharing evaluation. Now you can transfer your files with each other.
